Wyoming

The word Wyoming means “land of vast plains” in the Algonquin language. Wyoming marks the place where these plains run up against rugged mountain ranges. For centuries, Wyoming’s high plains were the roaming grounds for the tremendous herds of American bison and for the Shoshone, Crow, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho nations. At the turn of the 20th century, as American bison faced near extinction on the Great Plains, Wyoming took action to preserve the few dozen that remained, setting up a refuge for them at Yellowstone National Park. Bison remain at Yellowstone today, thus making Wyoming the only state where bison have been a constant presence from pre-Columbian times up to the present. Today, Wyoming’s rangelands are populated by pronghorn antelope, deer, cattle, and sheep, and the landscape is dotted with farming and ranching communities. Even today, Wyoming, the Cowboy State, evokes a frontier feeling. Wyoming is also called the Equality State because the territory granted women the right to vote in 1869 -- compared to 1920 for the rest of the United States. In 1924, Wyoming elected the United State’s first woman governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross.

Stuffed Green Peppers

Reviewed on Dec. 3, 2008 by Jody D.
This stuffed pepper recipe was wonderful! I did make a few changes after reading other reviews, though. I used brown instead of white rice. I added a bag of frozen veggie meat crumbles, I used grated pepperjack cheese instead of swiss because we like our food to be a little spicy. Also, instead of using tomato sauce, I used a can of spaghetti sauce to add extra flavor. The only things I'd do differently next time is to add more cheese than I did and either use bigger peppers or an extra one because I had a bit of filling left over. These were great and my husband even loved them!
